Condtion Assessments and Conservation

Before any conservation work is undertaken, it is necessary to undertake an assessment of the object or collection. This cannot be achieved via photos, the piece/pieces needs to be in the workshop. After the investigation and analysis a detailed condition report, options for conservation treatments and estimates will be provided.

The Condition report will include

Description of the object/items to be conserved, dimensions etc.

Original methods and materials.

Detailed description of present condition.

Identify damage.

How and why there is deterioration.

Any past restoration.

Insect damage.

Damp or mould problems past or present.

Photographs.

Recommendations

            Description of the conservation work proposed.

            Methods and materials

            Any additional personnel from other disciplines.

            Health and safety requirements, if needed.

Estimate

            Time with estimated date for completion

            Cost including materials and any travel and accommodation needed.

            Payment terms

            Date and duration of estimate.

 

 

When the work is complete you will receive a final report, this should be kept with the item that has undergone conservation. This report should be passed on to subsequent owners.

 

The Final Report will include

            The description of item prior to conservation.

A detailed record of methods carried out with a photographic record of before, during and after the conservation.

Materials used.

Recommendations for future care of the object.
